How 'Showgirl' Emerged as the Glittering Aesthetic of This Year

Following a 31-year tenure on the iconic Vegas strip, the performers from the revue Jubilee! executed their last choreographed kick in 2016. The show, renowned for its ornate costumes crafted by American fashion designer Bob Mackie, came to an end due to declining audience numbers and disappointed critics who described it as a spectacle “a relic of another era”.

Currently, roughly eight years later, the showgirl persona, or at least the showgirl aesthetic, is making a comeback.

The Master of Sequins

Known as the “king of sparkle”, Mackie has made dramatic stage sparkle his signature style, clothing everyone from Hollywood icons to Madonna. Recently, a “barely-there” bodysuit he made for Cher in 1978 commanded $57,600, far exceeding its estimated price, while a shimmering beaded bodysuit with lamé wings that Mackie crafted for Tina Turner for a 1977 concert sold for $19,200.

“I believe it looks more appealing for the new generation of stars who is looking for something other than what they knew from childhood”, he told a newspaper. “New stars are pushing toward a show-stopping, more spectacular, show-stopping, grand statement.”

A Musical Comeback

It’s a look that glided all the way to the heart of the cultural zeitgeist in 2025 largely due to a global pop icon. Recently, the entertainment titan wore one of Mackie’s original Jubilee! costumes on the cover of her new musical project. The bedazzled bra and thong, plumed armbands and shimmering headpiece were tailor-made for a record called The Life of a Showgirl.

Swift has company. This year, glamorous nods have been adopted by music artists including Dua Lipa as they danced across world tours in sparkles, cut-outs and ostrich feathers, spotlighted against camp sets. Her fashion curator a fashion expert told a fashion magazine he wanted to bring “a stage persona” to her Radical Optimism tour – referencing pictures from the 50s, Lipa’s dancers waved giant ostrich feather fans.

Pulling from History

These artists and other hitmakers also reference 19th-century entertainment forms, including vaudeville and ensemble references. The results are vastly different from the late-century pop style of short shirts and cargo pants, and urban dance moves that came before them.

But not everyone are on board with this glamour resurgence. An ex-showgirl, a former Jubilee! showgirl who performed in the 2000s says the trend is “confusing”. She thinks the word showgirl is being “employed as an umbrella term encompassing everything from The Radio City Rockettes to Broadway performers and now even today's icons.”

The Coveted Classic Look

For gen Z and millennial stars, Mackie’s vintage designs have become extremely desirable. In 2024, a famous actress gave a nod to one of Mackie’s iconic muses, Cher, when the actress wore a translucent sequined dress designed by the designer in 2001, which was inspired by one he designed for Cher to wear in 1967. Months after, Miley Cyrus paid an undisclosed sum to buy the Mackie tasseled mini dress she had worn at an awards show to perform at the Grammys. In September, Carpenter wore a trio of retro Mackie designs at the MTV Video Music Awards. They are also a popular item among fashion collectors.

“The showgirl aesthetic bring about nostalgia for a past glamour,” says a historian, an expert at the a Las Vegas university, who studies the history of showgirls. “Currently it is seen as a sort of ‘acceptable’ allure because it has been modified. It has got all the elegance, the sparkles and the sparkle but without the nudity.”

More Than Just Style: An Icon of the City

Chung says the showgirl image are central to the iconography of Sin City. She points to one-time leader Oscar Goodman who, during civic functions, was accompanied by two showgirls. While Las Vegas no longer has any traditional showgirl productions, Jung says they are still employed as an emblem of the city, appearing at gatherings and in marketing. “The showgirl is still a remaining symbol of Las Vegas glitz and glamour,” the expert says.

An Appeal of Escape

The former showgirl says the transformative effect of a showgirl is part of the appeal. This idea Swift references in a recent documentary series that captures the behind-the-scenes action from her extensive 2023 Eras tour, which included exhausting preparations, training and numerous shows across 21 countries, each lasting 3.5 hours.

Hardy recalls her own stage routines as “comparable to completing an endurance race in heels every night”. Her feathered headdress tipped the scales at 34lbs. “I had to support it all the way up the steps to the platform from the green rooms three floors below in the lower level. I had to start early for my entrance so I could recover before I performed. You are working hard the whole time but crafting this fantasy that it’s effortless and gorgeous and magical.”

It could be this is where the appeal of the showgirl really is found. In the chaos of 2025 there is a craving for a break from reality. What better figure to emulate than these performers, who have always personified fantasy, idealism and a universe where nobody falters.
