The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
